Karst area
Bela Krajina derives its name from the glistening white birch trees that dominate this area, especially in winter. Another feature you will notice here is the countless light-colored rocks and white stones scattered among the trees and on the borders of the gardens. But don’t let the name of the area fool you. Although white certainly predominates here, Bela Krajina offers a wide range of colors.
One of the most picturesque places in Bela Krajina is the meandering river Kolpa, which forms a natural border with Croatia. The river is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for kayaking and fishing in the calm of its clear waters. In the warmer months, locals and visitors flock to its shores to swim and sunbathe, creating a lively atmosphere.

Mysterious human fish
Olm is part of the Proteidae family. Some people also call it proteus or cave salamander. It is an aquatic amphibian and the largest cave animal. Oml black, which can be found in the region of Belá Krajina, is an interesting subspecies, especially thanks to its dark pigmentation. Proteus anguinus parkelj, which is its full name, lives endemically only in the shallow karst area of Bela Krajina, on an area of just 10 km2. It is, therefore, of extraordinary scientific and research importance. You can learn more about this mysterious “human fish” in the info center near the town of Črnomelj.
Cultural heritage
In addition to natural beauty, Bela Krajina is full of history and cultural heritage. The region’s strategic location at the crossroads of Central Europe and the Balkans has left an indelible mark on its identity.
The charming villages dotted around the county are home to traditional wooden houses decorated with intricate carvings, a testament to the region’s rich woodworking tradition. Walking through these villages is like stepping back as the locals proudly preserve their customs and folklore.
In addition, you will not be able to ignore the number of small vineyards scattered on the sunny hills. Almost everyone grows and makes wine here. The vines here have excellent conditions for growth, and the wine from them is excellent. Don’t be afraid to ask the locals; they will be happy to show you their products. And if you’re shy, head out on at least one of the wine trails and visit one of the local wineries. You definitely won’t regret it.
But no visit to Belá Krajina would be complete without exploring the local culinary specialties. The region boasts a diverse gastronomic scene with dishes influenced by its proximity to Croatia and the Balkans. Be sure to try Bela Krajina specialties such as “belokranjska pogača”, savory bread baked in a traditional wood-fired oven, and “belokranjska pogača s skuto”, a delicious pastry filled with cottage cheese.
