A tourist route called the Romantic Road in Germany (Romantische Straße) runs from Würzburg to Füssen in Bavaria. It was opened in the 1950s in the former American zone. Today it is the best-known and most popular recreational route in Germany, famous mainly among Japanese tourists. Taste the local dishes, draw strength from pure nature, watch an open-air show or play golf!
A romantic trip includes a stay in the fresh air, culture and good food
The Romantic road is 413 km long and leads through twenty interesting historical cities (Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Augsburg, Landsberg am Lech, etc.), past castles and through stunning natural scenery in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. It therefore combines the beauty of nature and culture, but also hospitality. Its name expresses what many tourists from home and abroad perceive when looking at the local medieval towns or the fairytale castle Neuschwanstein near Schwangau near Füssen. And that is the fascination and the feeling of a special return to the past. From north to south, the landscape gradually transforms from picturesque river valleys, fertile farmland, forests and meadows to dramatic mountain scenery. It is worth coming here to enjoy important art events, all kinds of celebrations and excellent regional cuisine!
Romance by bike, car or bus
If you are traveling by car, caravan or motorbike, simply follow the brown signs that connect the individual towns along the route. The Romantic Road is a high-quality recreational route that is signposted along its entire length in both directions. Currently, however, tourist routes are included in navigation systems only very modestly. Therefore, do not rely only on navigation aids, but really rather follow the brown signs to avoid stress and unnecessary complications. This way you will get to less used roads, where you can enjoy the diversity of the surrounding landscape and drive through unknown and magical villages.
Cyclists can follow the green signs of the long-distance cycle path, which is 440 km long and runs from Würzburg to Füssen. Cycling along the Romantic Road is undoubtedly a fantastic experience. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more intense way to spend one of Germany’s most famous and popular holidays. Artistic and natural treasures are lined up on the cycle path like pearls on a necklace, just waiting for you to discover them. Historic old towns, medieval walls with fortified towers and gates, baroque pilgrimage churches, Roman abbeys, all this and much more will put a smile on your face.
Blue signs indicate the route for cars. It is a real pleasure for the driver. Almost 500 km pass through beautiful nature and charming villages and towns. You will discover a number of extraordinary and inspiring sights, outside of mass tourism. It is also good to know that there are buses that can take bicycles along the Romantic Road from April to October. Book them in advance and they will safely transport you to your desired destination or back to your starting point.
Accommodation options on the Romantic Road
The well-equipped campsites along the route offer visitors tents, caravans and motor vehicles, in short everything they need to make their journey between Würzburg and Füssen truly unique and unforgettable. There are various campsites to choose from, e.g. Kalte Quelle in Würzburg, Lech-Camping in Augsburg, Ludwigshof am See, Camping Brunnen in Schwangau, etc. Some cities, e.g. Rothenburg ob der Tabuer, Feuchtwangen, Dinkelsbühl or Donauwörth, have youth hostels available.
